The Details
Gather Food Pantry sought a larger, more efficient facility to support its growing mission to offer innovative programs that build food security in welcoming and dignified ways.
A key part of the design process was understanding how food, staff, volunteers, and visitors move through the building. JSA worked closely with Gather to map operational workflows, ensuring the warehouse, market, and commercial kitchen could function seamlessly while creating an intuitive and reassuring experience for pantry patrons.
JSA Design began working with Gather Food Pantry in 2021 to help identify the right home. The team evaluated numerous potential properties and conducted multiple test fits to assess their suitability. While several sites proved unfeasible, the eventual selection offered the square footage Gather needed, along with a critical operational advantage: loading facilities and a ramp that allowed delivery vehicles direct access to the warehouse.
As the project moved forward, the team navigated several unexpected challenges, including delayed tenant turnover, a leaking roof, outdated glazing and electrical infrastructure, and the discovery of asbestos-containing roofing materials. The design and construction team collaborated closely to address these issues while maintaining an aggressive project schedule. The commercial kitchen proved particularly complex, requiring careful coordination among architectural, structural, mechanical, and plumbing consultants to accommodate a grease tank within a constrained parking lot.
The completed facility now supports food warehousing and distribution for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity while expanding Gather’s ability to serve the community. New spaces include a commercial kitchen, teaching kitchen, and community gathering area that enable the preparation of grab-and-go meals, cooking classes, community dinners, and special events. A raised garden further extends the organization’s mission, creating new opportunities for education, engagement, and access to fresh food.
